To our longtime viewers and any who may be concerned
First, we would like to express appreciation for your visits our site. We hope you enjoyed watching the views as much as we’ve enjoyed providing them. We hope at some point in the very near future we can continue to provide the beautiful views of the Ventura harbor that many have come to appreciate over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, we have a bit of distressing news regarding the web cam.
Sprint who provides the service for the data card or (air card) which allows the camera to broadcast pictures over the Internet, has imposed a 5 Gigabyte (5GB) limit on this device. This means that you are only allowed to use 5GB of data in a month. If you exceed this limit, the additional charges can be staggering. The camera, depending on the amount of viewers, can typically eat through 5 or 6 Gigs of data in 6 or 7 days.
This was not a problem in the past because the service plan that was used with this card was classified as "unlimited". At this time however, all of the major carriers no longer provide "unlimited" service for data cards. Even when a wireless service provider says they do, it really means they have a 5GB cap. We know that sounds like misleading advertising, but we could fill an entire book regarding that subject matter. Sprint also feels that because the standard 2 year contract plan on the
data card had expired, they no longer have to honor their agreement to allow “unlimited” data usage on the card for one flat rate. The fact that you have been a loyal, long-term customer with the company for years seems to matter not. While this may be legal, as far as what the law says they can do, we question the ethical context of their decision.
Nevertheless, this is the dilemma that we’re faced with and we’ve been trying to work out a viable solution before too much time passes with the camera dark. The best news we’ve heard so far, is that when the 4G networks are up and running at full capacity, we’ll then be able to purchase a wireless modem that will have “unlimited” data use (with no 5GiG cap) for a flat rate. But, the Ventura area won’t receive this service until some time next year (best cast scenario). But we’re not going to sit around until
then. We’ll continue to work on a solution and it is our hope that we can come up with one shortly.
In the mean time we welcome your thoughts and ideas on the subject at seabreezecams@gmail.com.
Once again, thank you for visiting our site and to you and yours best wishes.
TAKE CARE,
Sea Breeze Cams
